Mark Zbikowski is a software engineer who was born on December 29, 1956, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1979 and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981.
Zbikowski started his career at Microsoft Corporation in 1981, where he played a significant role in developing the DOS operating system. He led the development of several major components of DOS, including the file system, memory management, and the command interpreter. He also contributed to the development of other Microsoft products, including Windows, MS-DOS Executive, and Windows NT.
Later, Zbikowski joined IBM in 2000 and held several leadership positions in software development. He was the Chief Technologist for IBM's Systems Technology Group, where he was responsible for technical strategy and direction for the group's products. He left IBM in 2013 and co-founded his own company, FyrSoft LLC, which provides services and solutions for Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and other Microsoft technologies.
Zbikowski has received several awards for his contributions to the software industry, including the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award in 2004 and the ACM Software System Award in 2018. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
